Procedures

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Surgery can be performed on either the upper or lower lids, or both. Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

Specifically, eyelid surgery can treat:
• Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
• Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
• Bags under the eyes
• Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
• Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

FAQ:
What is Blepharoplasty?
This is an eyelid procedure to remove excess fat, skin and atrophied or loose muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Dr. Koumanis does most of these procedures at his office rather than the hospital or surgery center.

How is the procedure performed?
Incisions are made within the natural creases of the eyelids. The surgeon removes some of the herniated fat and excess skin and then closes the incisions with a very fine suture. Once the sutures are removed, usually within three to five days, the scars are practically nonexistent after several months of healing.

What should I expect postoperatively?
After the surgery, your eyes will be tender, swollen and sore with some bruising. These should resolve within a few days. The discomfort can usually be controlled with pain medication prescribed the physician. Eyedrops will also be prescribed to control either watery or dry eyes. You may experience blurry vision for the first few days after the procedure.

When will I see my results?
You should see a noticeable difference several days after the procedure; once the swelling has gone down and the bruising has faded.

Will blepharoplasty get rid of the wrinkles (crow feet) on the corner of my eyes?
No but there are several ways, surgical and non-surgical to reduce the lines. Please discuss this with Dr. Koumanis during your consultation. He may incorporate another procedure with the blepharoplasty or at the least inform you of options and to make sure your outcome is the same as your expectation.
