Microneedling for Acne Scars
This is a case of a 55-year-old male with a history of deep acne scarring of the face and neck. The patient came in to our clinic seeking Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) and microneedling to improve the smoothness of his skin in those areas. We took a small vial of blood under sterile conditions from his arm and spun it down in our specialized centrifuge. This allowed for separation of the blood and his PRP. We put numbing cream all over his face and neck for 30 minutes and then the procedure began when his face felt anesthetized. The automatic sterile microneedling device oscillates multiple microneedles at high speeds, making small perforations in the skin as you pass over areas of the face and neck with it.
This stimulates new collagen production, revitalizing the skin and smoothing out scars and wrinkles. The patient’s PRP is used as a gliding liquid as the micropen moves over the surface. We then washed his face with his PRP as this helps promote collagen production and brings micronutrients to the area of injury while it heals. Down time is less than 24 hours and involves some slight facial redness. The patient underwent 4 treatments, each 6-8 weeks apart.
The patient was very pleased with the results as there was a significant improvement in the smoothness of the skin and decreased contour in many important areas which had previous scarring. This was all accomplished with minimal to no discomfort.
